The wonderfull Music of Merlin!

I was swept up in all the 50th-annerversary-Doctor-Who-special-Matt-Smith-Leaving-in-christmas-Silence-will-fall stuff, and I realised that I hadn't been watching Merlin in ages.

 

I knew every single episode back to front, and could write down the script if I tried. But going through episodes in your head is not the same as watching the show on TV.

 

I decided to start from the very beginning, Episode 1, Series 1: The Dragon's Call!

 

As soon as I started watching, I noticed how well the Music fits the scenes, how it makes it feel so much more real, more magical, more dramatic, more emotional, more amazing, more Merlin!

This post has no topic, nothing particular I'm writing about. Just a whole lot of Merlin related stuff.

First of all, The Merlin Mega Fan website has been down for MONTHS! So to get it finished ASAP, I will only be publishing this blog every 2 weeks on Thursdays or Fridays to make more time for the Website.

Now then, on to a whole lot of Merlin related Stuff...

 

Atlantis

Jonny Capps & Julian Murphy's new show! It was very Merlin-y, wasn't it? A young man arriving in an extraordinary place un aware of his destiny. That sentence could be applied to both Merlin and Jason in each of their first episodes!

 

In my previous post, I wrote bout some of the similarity's that I had already spotted between Merlin and Atantis, like Sarah Parish having acted in both shows, and "The Legend Begins" being on the Atlantis trailer, and the Merlin Series 1 Part 1 DVD set.

 

Now I have spotted another actor who I remember being in Merlin!

 

Yes, Alexander Siddig Has been in Merlin.

 

Think back, way back, all the way back to series 1... Now think episode 10, the moment of truth... Merlin returns to Ealdor...

The Atlantis - tonight at 8:25!

As you may or may not know, The Producers of Merlin, Jonny Capps & Julian Murphy, have been busy creating a new series called Atlantis - and it airs on BBC1 tonight at 8:25 (for UK viewers only. It will air in Canada on 12th October, and in America on 23rd November)!

 

Atlantis is a strange, ancient city with palaces so huge that is was said to have been built by Giants!

A young Jason arrives at the city, and an epic adventure begins.

Sounds very much like Merlin, doesn't it... a young Merlin arrives at the great and ancient city of Camelot and a magical adventure begins...

at the end of the trailer you will see this:

 

"The Legend Begins". hmm. Does this mean a second series has already been commissioned? Maybe so, but haven't I seen that somewhere before...

oh yes!

This show is starting to look quite a bit like Merlin.

 

But whether the show will work or not depends on tonight...

 

Ps: for any of you who are also doctor who fans, some teasers for the 50th anniversary special are being shown before and after Atlantis. 

What's John Hurt doing now?

Most of you will already know what John Hurt is doing now, as he is now in one of the most famous TV shows around, which is about to celebrate its' 50th Anniversary!

The Marathon Merlin watch

Do you know anyone who has hardly watched Merlin, or has NEVER watched Merlin? Are they keen to watch but don't know where to start?
If so, Then continue reading!
A friend of mine came to stay quite recently and had never watched Merlin before, and I was determined that before they left, they would know the full story line through-out the whole show.
But they were only staying for 10 days.
 Merlin has 5 series', each with 13 episodes. That's 65 episodes.
There wasn't time to watch all 65 episodes, so I came up with a list of 38 episodes which spread through out the whole show and covered the full story line! We watched a few episodes a day, and completed the list just in time!

It is taking a lot longer than I expected to update as the website builder I use keeps malfunctioning!

Magical Creatures: The Afanc

The Afanc was the creature which contaminated the water supply of Camelot way back in Series 1, episode 3, The Mark of Nimueh.
So now I will be thinking back, and studying each aspect of the Afanc.

Where do Afanc's come from?
An Avank is a creature conjured from clay using very powerful magic. They are placed inside some kind of egg:

Then they hatch out and grow into this:

This Afanc was conjured by the sorceress Nimueh and sent to Camelot's water supply to contaminate it.

Contaminated Water
As I said, this Afanc was sent to Camelot where it hatched out and contaminated the water. I'm not exactly sure how the Afanc could contaminate the water. Maybe it was like Morgause's sleeping spell over Camelot with Morgana as the living presence sustaining it: Nimueh used a spell to contaminate the water and the Afanc sustained the magic. Anyway, if you drink the contaminated water, your skin turns white, and you lose all your strength - then die.

Cures to the Illness
There is no scientific or medical cure to the illness caused by the Afanc. Your only hope would be magic, like when Merlin healed Gwen's father using a magic poultice...

Or to kill the Afanc.

How to Destroy an Afanc
An Afanc is made up of two of the four base elements, Earth and Water. The other two base elements, Wind and Fire, will destroy it.

So that's pretty much all I know about the Afanc!

Angel Coulby's acting Career

I once heard that before Merlin, Angel Coulby had been on TV much more than her fellow co-stars. They were right!

From looking at my previous acting career posts, you will see that Colin Morgan had only been in 2 TV shows before Merlin, and the same for Bradley James. Angel Coulby has been in 27 TV shows before Merlin!

Knights of Camelot - Backround

The knights of Camelot series 4

Ok, anyone who has watched Merlin will know at least a bit about the knights of Camelot.
But what do we know about their family background? That is what I will be piecing together from the little that is said about them in the show!

Sir Gwaine

Gwaine never met his father. He was a nobleman, a knight in Caerleon's army. He died in battle, leaving his mother penniless. When she went to the King for help, he turned her away.
We know that he has one sister, but he said that she was an evil old toad, and would be eternally grateful if she was banished from Camelot!

 

Sir Leon

We were not told much about Leon's family background at all. We know that he was born noble, but apart from that, all I can tell you is from what Gwen told Morgana in series 3: Gwen's mother was a maid in sir Leon's household, so they grew up together (which means that he has probably met Elyan before series 3). Hardly a background, but it will have to do.

Sir Percival

Percival's family were killed by Cenred's Army when Morgana and Morgause attacked Camelot. Apart from that, there is nothing else that is said about his background!

 Sir Lancelot

When Lancelot was a boy, his village was attacked. He was the only one who escaped alive. His family were killed. From then on, he trained to become a great warrior, so that he would never be defenceless again.

Sir Elyan

Elyan's Father was Tom the blacksmith (series 1), and his mother was a maid in Sir Leon's house hold. He has one sister: Guinevere! We see Gwen living with her father in series 1, so by this time, Elyan had already left home.
Elyan's father, tom, was executed wrongly, accused of aiding a known sorcerer.
We are not sure what has happened to Elyan's mother. Either she was always away in service, or she died, or was killed, or if she and Tom lived separately.

Sir Mordred

Although Mordred was a knight of Camelot for a very short time before turning to Morgana's side, we know quite a lot about his background.
He was a druid, so he grew up in druid camps. We know there was a time when he lived in a druid camp in the forest of Esitear ( I don't know how to spell Esitear, so I just spelt it how it sounds), because of series 2 ep. 3, The nightmare begins, when Morgana went to seek out the druids.
Some time in his childhood he met Kara (see series 5 episode 11, the drawing of the Dark).
He has always been destined to kill Arthur (NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!).

King Arthur / prince Arthur

Need I say anything?
His Father was the King of Camelot, Uther, and his Mother was Ygrain. Arthur was born of Magic because Ygrain could not conceive. Uther sacrificed Ygrain's life for Arthur's, and then blamed magic. If you need to know more, watch Merlin!
