Charactor Analyses (1)

Anyone who has watched at least one episode of Merlin, or who knows the Arthurian Legend will probably know a bit about the main characters: Merlin, Arthur, Gwen, Morgana (or Morgan Le Fay in legend), Uther and Gaius.
Merlin, Arthur, Gwen and Morgana, Series 1 and Series 5

But what about the characters who have only appeared once or twice, like Kara or Cedric? Unless you have recently watched them, you are probably thinking "who?".
There isn't as much knowledge about these lesser characters, but here, I will try to pull together some brief explanations about these characters in a quick list.

Kara
Kara was a druid girl who Mordred knew when they were children. They probably grew up in the same druid camp, possibly the one that Arthur raided in Series 2 ep.3, Mordred's 2nd episode, which would explain why when Kara grew up, she joined Morgana's army of Saxons to fight against Arthur, who (could have) destroyed her home and family. She was focused completely on the destruction of Camelot and Arthur, not caring at all when she killed a guard. The only times she was understandable or likable was through Mordred's eyes, when he was caring for her or trying to help her. She appeared in Series 5 episode 11, The Drawing of the Dark.

Cedric/Cornelius Sigan
Cedric was quite a character! He was just your average con-man/opportunistic thief - until he broke into the volts and released the soul of Cornelius Sigan which then possessed him!
Every child who grew up in Camelot knew the story: Sigan was a sorcerer who's magic was said to have helped build Camelot itself. He had the power to turn day into night and turn the tides, and he was revered - and feared. But his magic grew too powerful, and the King at that time ordered his execution. He cursed Camelot, saying he would return and raise the city to the ground. Up until the day of his execution, he worked on a way to cheat death - and succeeded. To find out more, watch Series 2, ep 1, the Curse of Cornelius Sigan.

Assassins sent by King Odin
Myror

King Odin was constantly seeking revenge on Arthur Pendragon, the man who killed his son. Odin's son challenged Arthur to a duel. There was no cause for it, and Arthur asked him to withdraw, but he wouldn't. Perhaps he wanted to prove himself. Arthur felt regret for killing him, but Odin never forgave him. The first assassin he found was Myror, the greatest in the 5 kingdoms. Luckily, Arthur was already undercover pretending to be an ordinary knight when Myror was hired, and because of Merlin's magic, Arthur survived... and Myror is dead.

The other group of assassins arrived in Camelot on Arthur's birthday disguised as members of a performing circus. Their method was quite simple: gain trust by not killing Arthur during a knife-throwing act, but sedating him by putting a drugged apple in his mouth as the knife target, which he would eat later. Then, when the sedative had taken effect, kill or knock out the guards, and strike. Unfortunately for this assassin, Uther would not allow him to kill Arthur with out a fight. Uther won, and the assassin was killed - but not before taking his final revenge: by killing Uther with a knife.

Shield salesman
I don't know if this person has a name, as it wasn't mentioned in his episode (series 1, ep. 2). He was an illegal salesman selling magical and enchanted weaponry in some dark alleyway or corridor, possibly a black market. He had magic, and enchants the weaponry himself. He sold an enchanted shield to knight Valiant of the Weston isles, who ordered the snakes on the shield to kill the salesman.

Dagr
Dagr was a violent thug who seemed to rely off money from a tavern belonging to a woman called Mary. He came in series 3 ep. 4 (Gwaine). He asked Mary for his "fair share", meaning that either they had previously come to some agreement about the money, or that Mary was his wife, entitling Dagr to half her money. After he and his band of thugs were beaten in a fight by Arthur, he and his fellow thug Ebor planned to take revenge by using magic crystals to disguise as two knights in Camelot's melee and killing the prince. Luckily for Arthur, Merlin found out about them, and Gwaine stepped in to help Arthur defeat them.

This is just a small selection: I will do some more posts like this in the future.

character summary's for series 2

Series 2, a very romantic and, as usual, dramatic series. This series contains big discovery's for Morgana, the start of a relationship for Gwen, and more challenges for Merlin and Arthur to overcome.

So here's my character summary's for series 2.
Merlin

Merlin's magic grew in power, and he was prepared to risk more for Arthur and for Camelot, though this meant that he was still reliant on the great dragon. I don't think he expected to fall in love when he met Freya. Merlin suffered a few losses in this series (Freya dying, his father dying), but he managed to recover almost unnaturally quickly, so that he had the strength to protect Arthur. Merlin also became a dragon lord!

Arthur
Arthur began a difficult and secret relationship with Gwen. He was willing to risk anything, including his own life, for her (which made Merlin's destiny a whole lot harder!).
He began disobeying his father more, for the good of Camelot, which he cared about more than anything (except Guinevere!)
He also started to stand up for the people more, and his beliefs, and he even started to listen to Merlin - occasionally!
Arthur discovered that he was born of magic when he met his mother, conjured from the spirit land by Morgause. He found out that Uther was to blame for his mother's death, and it was only because of Merlin that he didn't kill his own father!

Morgana
Morgana's nightmare's, as we knew by series 2, was a form of magic: the seers power. This series, her powers advanced. She realised that she had magic. At first she was terrified, knowing Uther's hatred of magic, but after time with the druids, she was less afraid of her powers. But she began to be tempted over to the dark side when she was re-united with Mordred, who was with a band of renegades sworn to bring down the king and Camelot. She did help them, although the idea that they were going to bring down Uther and all who followed him did trouble her.
She was in a very confusing place: She hated Uther, and disagreed with his laws against magic, but she was not yet an enemy of Camelot.
By the end of the series, Morgause, her half sister, used her to try and bring down the kingdom (only to be stopped by Merlin and Arthur), but Morgana was only half aware of this. At the end of the series, she was poisoned by Merlin(who had no choice), and then Morgana took her away in a magical vortex...

Gwen

Gwen began a relationship with prince Arthur. This was very difficult, as she was only a servant, and servants are not allowed to date noblemen like knights, let alone a prince!
But this was not the only problem with her relationship with Arthur.
Lancelot returned (earning a living by fighting). She found herself falling for Lancelot and Arthur. She had to make a choice. But in the end it was Lancelot who chose to leave, so as not to come between Arthur and Gwen.
Then Arthur was enchanted to fall in love with the Lady Vivian.
He couldn't even remember his feeling for Gwen!
Gwen at first thought that Arthur's feelings for Vivian were genuine, but when Merlin explained what had happened, She un-enchanted Arthur with a kiss.
By the end of the series, she was still in love with Arthur, despite of everything!

So those are my character summaries for series 2.

Charactor Summary's for series 1

In Every New series of Merlin, the story lines become much more dramatic in every way possible. Characters changed as they discovered new things about themselves that they never even knew!

Here's a quick summary of the Main Characters in series 1.

Series 1
Merlin Series 1/2

Merlin: Merlin was told of his destiny by the great dragon in Camelot when he first arrived. He found it difficult to start off with because although he had magic, he was only just starting to learn spells. His magic wasn't very strong, but for him, this series was all about developing his magic, and trying to get along with Prince Arthur.

Arthur: Prince Arthur was very arrogant in the first series, as well as being very  mean and unfair to his servant, who he never gave any credit to. He was a fearsome warrior, but a very unlikable person, who was strongly affected by his father's influence. He was nearly always in danger, and if it wasn't for Merlin, he would have died in the first episode! In spite of everything, he would always try and do what was right, to help the people of Camelot, even though he made out that he only cared for himself.

Morgana: The Lady Morgana never liked Uther's war against magic, for she believed that not everybody who used Magic could be evil, so she was very rebellious against him even though at times she belived the King cared for her. She was very troubled about her dreams, because her nightmares could predict the future, and she had the seer's power, yet hardly knew a thing about it. She was good friends with her maid, Gwen, and always stood up for her, even if she got herself locked in the dungeons. She, like Arthur, was also a good warior, and very strong minded. But by the end of the series her nightmares were so real that she knew what would happen when the questing beast arrived...

Gwen: Gwen was the kind, maid of the Lady Morgana. She was very atracted to Merlin when he first arrived, for standing up to Arthur, who she said was a bully, then to Lancelot because he was not only kind, but handsom and chivalrous. She was always gentle, though at times she would acidently speak her mind inapropriatly because she was a servant. In the scond half of the series, she started to speak up for the people more, and found that Arthur started to listen to her. By the end of the series, she was clearly atrracted to Arthur!
