series' side by side - Part 2

Here is series' by side part 2! In the run up to series 5 Merlin, I read some comments about the series from the cast and crew who basically said that is you were to put the 5th series side by side with the 1st series, you would see how incredibly different they are.
So that's exactly what I'm doing. Well... sort of. I'm basically comparing the differences between them.
First of all, if you are incredibly behind on watching Merlin, or simply need reminding of these series', here's some trailers.
Series 1

Series 5

So now you've been reminded of the series', lets compare some more differences.

Warlock in Training to Sorcerer supreme!
At a first glance, it would appear that nothing much had changed about Merlin. His clothes were the same, he was still Arthur's servant, he still lived in the room at the back of Gaius's chambers, etc. But there are more differences than you think.
In the very first episode of Merlin, Merlin came to Camelot without knowing a single spell, or anything about his destiny. He even said that if anyone wanted to kill Arthur he'd give them a hand!
But once he had accepted his destiny, he began to study magic, learning basic spells, enchantments, healing spells, and more, but he was clearly still a novice compared to himself in series 5.
In series 5, Merlin was a master of magic with amazing capability! He could perform powerful magic, even when he was 80 years old - or an 80 year old woman! - and ageing spells take incredible stamina to hold. I have also noticed that Merlin was a lot more prepared to reveal his magic to Arthur, and there were many situations when this nearly happened. For example: series 5 ep. 1, when Arthur was about to be killed by slave traders working for Morgana, Merlin told them that they would have to get past him first.
By the end of series 5, we see 80 year old Merlin walking down a street in modern day time, which means that Merlin is immortal, and he can live forever. That's what I think anyway.

Druid boy to Knight
We first see Mordred in series 1, as a young druid boy on the run, trying to escape Camelot with the help of Morgana and Merlin, then Arthur. He had the ability to talk to people with his mind suggesting he had magic. He was oblivious to the fact that he was destined to kill Arthur, or that he would one day become a knight of Camelot.
In series 5, Mordred attempted to re-join Morgana, perhaps hoping to tempt her back to the kindness he once saw in her. But by the end of the first double parter, Mordred tried to kill Morgana, knowing that she was wrong about Arthur and Camelot, seeing that she had become consumed by bitterness.
Mordred was knighted for saving Arthur's life, and became a knight of the round table.
For a long time, Mordred was indisputably a loyal and noble knight, until he was reunited with his childhood sweetheart, Kara.
Kara was one of the people who had been lead in by Morgana, following her blindly, willing to do anything to help her overthrow Arthur.
She tried to kill Arthur, and was sentenced to death.
Mordred never forgave Arthur for this, and re-re-joined Morgana and her army, and killed Arthur with a sword forged in a dragons breath (NOOOOOOOOOO!).

Knights of the Round Table
The knights of Camelot and their rules have changed quite a lot.
In series 1, Uther made it the first code of Camelot that only those of noble blood could serve as knights, as he thought it the bond of trust that holds the knights together. This, however, actually limited the amount of warriors and the quality of fighting skills, as we saw when Lancelot came. He was only made a knight in series 3 by Arthur, alongside Gwaine, Percival, and Elyan.
In series 5 when Arthur was king, He allowed common men, as well as noble, to become knights, and doing so created the best knights in the five kingdoms.
Also, he had a round table instead of rectangular. At a rectangular table, the most important people sit at the ends of the table, with the less important people on the long sides. On a round table, as there are no ends and only one side, everyone who sat at the table were worth no more than each other.
This was a perfect sign of equality, as well as a symbol of everything that had changed for the better when Arthur was King.

So there you go, that's all the differences between series 1 and 5 I can think of. If you find any more, comment below (or wherever the commenting is)!

series' side by side - Part 1

In the run up to series 5 Merlin, I read some comments about the series from the cast and crew who basically said that is you were to put the 5th series side by side with the 1st series, you would see how incredibly different they are.
So that's exactly what I'm doing. Well... sort of. I'm basically comparing the differences between them.
First of all, if you are incredibly behind on watching Merlin, or simply need reminding of these series', here's some trailers.
Series 1

Series 5

So now you've been reminded of the series', lets compare some differences.

King of Camelot
One of the most obvious differences you will notice is that Arthur had become King, instead of Uther. In series 1, King Uther Pendragon's hatred of magic made him a harsh ruler, overreacting whenever he heard the words magic and sorcery. He often went too far, raiding druid camps, taking no prisoner's, sparing no one, and, like merlin once said, he executed anyone who even passed a sorcerer on the street (ok, maybe that was exaggerating, but actually, not that much!).
King Arthur Pendragon, on the other hand, still had magic outlawed, but he was far less aggressive than his father. By series 5, he had made a vow to treat druids with respect, which in some ways went against his own laws. He was very different from Uther, and from himself in series 1, which leads me to my next difference...

Prince to King
Arthur in series 1 was an arrogant prince who treated his servants like dirt, making out to everyone that he cared for no one but himself. In many ways, he took after his father, using his powers as prince for his own selfish means (this is mostly in ep. 1.) He did begin to change in series 1, starting to speak up for the people more, realising his duties. He also began to go against his father, although this didn't always work out.
In series 5, you will notice some immense changes about him. It is not just that he was King Arthur, but the fact that he was listening to Merlin (...sometimes...), and thinking of him not only as a servant, but as a friend. He had a round table instead of rectangular as a symbol of equality (More about this later). He would always do what he believed to be right, and to protect Camelot no matter what, even if he believed he would die (and he did in the end... NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!). Arthur had also, by this time, married Guinevere, and lets not forget that she used to be a servant...

Servant  to Queen
Guinevere, daughter of Tom, the Blacksmith. If I were to watch series 1, then immediately went on to watch series 5, then I would probably be thinking (If I were to erase my pre-existing knowledge of the Arthurian Legend) "who would have thought Gwen would be Queen?"
In series 5, we see her as Queen Guinevere Pendragon, wife of King Arthur. She was still Gentle and kind as she was in series 1, yet she had clearly adapted to being a Queen. She became quite strategic, actually. for example: In the first episode of series 5, when Arthur was planning his route to Ismere, Gwen suggested to approach from the west, through Annis's land, to take Morgana by surprise, or that fact that she never intended to execute her servant, but only made out to everyone that she did, to capture sifa's servant's father, who was the real enemy of Camelot.
Back in series 1, Gwen was the kind, gentle maid. Although she was a common servant, she wasn't like the others. She sometimes spoke her mind 'out of term', accidently, because it was not in her place to do so, as she was a servant. She didn't even like Arthur (well, maybe she did towards the end of series 1), and she called him a bully. She was also the maid to Lady Morgana...

Lady of Camelot to Enemy of Camelot
Well. The differences between Morgana in series 1 and 5 are astonishing, and are incredibly easy to spot.
In series 1, Morgana was manipulative and feisty, but she was also caring and understanding. She never did agree with Uther when he made out that all those with magic are evil, and constantly went against him; trying to smuggle Mordred the druid boy out of the city, helping Merlin fight for his village, Ealdor, finding food for the people when the curse of the unicorn caused drought and starvation... But even though she disagreed with Uther, she never tried to kill him (apart from ep. 12), and sometimes believed that he cared for her.
She once told Arthur that he was a better man than his father. She helped him through problems, saved his life, tried to protect him... maybe even fancied him a bit! She seemed so unlike the Morgana in series 5! or was she?
There are a few small elements that link morgana series 1 to morgana series 5, such as her disliking Uther and his laws, but there is one main element that I can see that started small, and grew and grew: Her magic.
It started off small, as we see in series 1. The seer's power was just the beginning of Morgana's magic, for it developed until morgana became a high priestess of the old religion
In series 5, She was the most feared enemy of Camelot, consumed with bitterness, she was ruthless in her quest to destroy Camelot (need I give examples!).

So there is part 1 of series' side by side. Part 2 should come out next Thursday, but be warned I might not. I have a VERY busy schedule planned for next week!

colin Morgan/doctor poll

If you have been reading this blog consistently you might be thinking: "a new post - on Sunday?" because I usually update on Thursday's or Fridays. But this is nothing to get worked up about.

or is it?

Remember recently I did a post called Colin Morgan as the doctor? If you didn't read it, then it basically said that Colin Morgan was on a long list of names suggested for the next doctor.
Colin Morgan in the Tardis as the doctor?

But What do you think about this? Do you think Colin Morgan should be the Doctor?

Vote in the poll (it's somewhere around this blog), but be quick because you only have up until 20th June, 4.30pm!

Too many spells!

Here I am again, going on about how much I love Merlin spells. I LOVE THEM! Anyone who has consistently read this blog might remember me saying that I am doing a Merlin marathon to collect all the spells. I can now say that I have so far collected 99 spells, and that is only all of series 1, and 8 episodes of series 2!

I love learning new spells, however long it takes, but if I simply (or not so simply) went ahead and wrote post after post only on Merlin spells, then I might start losing viewings.
So what can I do? TOO MANY SPELLS!
After all the panicking, I decided that at the end of each post, after I've written about the topic matter, I will add 5-10 spells depending on their length. That way I can still write spells on my blog, but It wont take up entire posts!
But as I said, I have 99 spells, and I need to get a huge hunk of them out of the way.

Colin Morgan as the Doctor?

A few days ago I read a long list of actors that people have suggested for the role of the 12th doctor, and I came across the name Colin Morgan!
Yes, I know it's one name in a long list, as I've already said, and there's probably one in a million chance of this happening, but imagine if it did?
How would we react if we suddenly found out he was the doctor?
For me personally, I'm not sure how I would feel as I haven't seen much of Colin Morgan outside of Merlin. As far as I'm concerned, Colin Morgan IS Merlin, as that's how I, and so many other Merlin fans know him.
But what do you think?
Comment and vote in the poll whether you think Colin Morgan should be the doctor or not (Ok, it's not going to happen, but comment anyway!).
